Lake Placid Lakes

Lakes - Lake Placid, New York

Sparkling clear lakes surrounds Lake Placid inviting the visitor for a day of boating around and enjoying the breathtaking views of the Majestic Adirondack Mountains, where many resorts lie in the lakeshore areas.

The Mirror Lake Inn, is one of them, and the nearest to Lake Placid, situated in the heart of the Olympic Village, and offering all the facilities and amenities of the best world-class resorts, including a private beach, outdoor heated pool featuring a waterfall and panoramic views of Mirror Lake and mountains beyond. Other facilities include indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, tennis court, outdoor ice skating rink and snowshoeing. Closer to this resort, there are different golf and skiing facilities.

Adirondack lakeside environment promotes a number of activities such as boating, fishing and swimming. In some areas, lakes are the starting or ending point of river rafting adventures or just relaxing, like in the proximity of Lake Placid Marina, while other settings offer picturesque events such as the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

This carnival is a weeklong celebration created as a traditional approach to cure "cabin fever" for the local residents. This festival became an annual event in 1897 and its main attraction is a castle made of ice as a centerpiece, and built with around 700 pound blocks of translucent, lake ice, equivalent to nearly 3000 ice blocks, each cut to the size of 2 feet wide by 2 feet thick by 4 feet long. Every edition of the festival presents a new castle with all its rooms and interior lighting illumination.

On the other hand, there are many boat tours away from the noise of public celebrations, like those at the Wellscroft Lodge, an elegant mission-style mansion, bread and breakfast selected for National Register of Historic Homes by the magazines Adirondack Life and Old House Interior.

From this location described as the "quintessential" Tudor-Revival Arts and Crafts style home, are just minutes from Lake Placid and the fly-fishing at the nearby Ausable River. Visitors can admire the scenic Adirondack Park, take a boat tour at Lake George and enjoy Montreal views.

Throughout the year, different activities and amenities are held in the different lakes and rivers inside the Adirondack Mountains perimeter, including the following:

- Tri-Lakes Snowmobile Club Poker Run

- Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

- Lake Colby Ice Fishing Derby

- Icebreaker Canoe Race

- Round The Mountain Canoe Race

- Festival of the Lakes

- Willard Hanmer Guideboat and Canoe Race

- Saranac Lake Water-ski Tournament

- Adirondack Canoe Classic

And the Great International Steamboat Regatta, featuring antique steamboats from the United States and Canada, in a tour running from Lake Flower, Lower and Middle Saranac Lake.

During December, Lake Placid and all the Villages and towns around receive the spirit of Christmas through different activities, including the Sparkle Village event, held downtown in Saranac Lake, where thousands of tiny white lights announce the arrival of Santa Claus right there, at the Christmas festival.

At Lake George, the Adirondack trout and salmon fly-fishing expeditions add adventure to your trip. Adirondack Mountains are often referred as "the closest thing to the Rockies East of the Mississippi", and they are in fact the place were the best salmon and trout is found on the East coast.

These excellence salmon and trout catches is believed to have a background, traced back 12,000 years ago, when the last Adirondack glacial retreat, and extremely cold tolerant fish species began feeding and thriving at the edges of those receding ice mountains, literally.

The whole Adirondack Mountains region has a total of 240 lakes, ponds and streams, from which, 9 of them are major rivers. The miles of streams and brooks offer countless fishing opportunities. Catches include bass, walleye, panfish, splake and the already noted salmon and trout.
